Two Hunterdon County based companies working to improve business operations by providing premium surge protection

Clinton, NJ – When Eric Emerson, CEO of e2 IT Consulting is asked how to best protect the IT infrastructure of his clients, he has tools for virus protection, file storage back-up, firewalls, and battery backup. Now, he added world class surge protection to his IT toolkit. By partnering with Zero Surge, e2 IT has access to their full line up of failure free plug-in surge protection products.

Why not use any surge protector I can buy at the store?

Almost every surge protector sold uses a component called a Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV). Developed for use as surge protection in the 1970’s, the MOV supported older style linear power supplies which were susceptible to changes in voltage. But modern electronics use switch mode power supplies which are more susceptible to changes in current flow. The MOV fails to act during changes in current flow leading to issues ranging from performance issues to shortened equipment life spans.

Which type of surge protection works best for today’s electronics?

Developed in 1989, the series mode filter technology created by Zero Surge continuously protects today’s electronics from changes in voltage and changes in current flow. Zero Surge products protect against worse case surges (6000 volt / 3000 amp), protect against in-rush current damage, and filters out EMI/RFI noise. This means clean power is all your equipment will receive thus extending its life by 50% or longer.

But I already use battery back up (UPS) that claims to have surge protection.

All battery backup hardware (UPS) that claim to have surge protection also use MOVs. MOVs wear out within a few years without warning (sometimes by causing fires!) and cause noise on data lines. For the MOVs to function with the UPS, their protection level is set to 400 – 500 volts instead of the UL recommended <330 volts which allows for an erosion of your power supplies. By preceding the UPS with a Zero Surge unit, the MOVs will be rendered inactive while still benefiting from the battery function.  This increases the life of the UPS and the connected equipment.

Which Zero Surge product should I use?

For most situations the Zero Surge plug-in products are the most appropriate class of product. It is always best to protect as close to the equipment as practical. The 2R15W, 8R15W, and 6R15W-4USB are the most used Zero Surge products. Contact your e2IT support team for specific recommendations.
